Powerchair League Recap – Rd 1 2021

The 2021 NSWPFA Powerchair League season has kicked off with some tense matches and impressive showings.

Opening the season was Sydney FC Powerchair Team taking on the Newcastle Jets Powerchair Football Club, with the Reserve Grade sides playing out a nail-biting 0-0 draw. The Premier League match followed a similar script for the first half before the Jets found their groove with some devastating team play. 3 goals from three different players – including goal keeper James Kim – in the space of 7 minutes saw them claim all three points.

The Western Sydney Wanderers Powerchair Team took on Hills United Football Club in the second set of matches. For the Reserve Grade match, the Wanderers struck just before the half thanks to a sneaky set play goal to Daniel O’Brien, but this was quickly cancelled out by a solo Josh Ryan effort to open the second half. Both teams had chances late on but neither could find a winning goal.

In the Premier League match, new signings for both sides made for an exciting affair on paper, but it was the Hills who made it count on the scoreboard. A first-half brace to Chris Suffield, followed by a Jacob Cross strike to begin the second half gave the Wanderers too much to chase. Congratulations to all teams for an entertaining first round and we hope the rest of the season sees more of the same!

Round 1 Results:

Reserve Grade:
Newcastle Jets 0-0 Sydney FC
Hills United 1-1 Western Sydney Wanderers

Premier League:
Newcastle Jets 3-0 Sydney FC
Hills United 3-0 Western Sydney Wanderers
